A small genus of small to medium-sized, South American freshwater fish closely related to the piranha and often referred to as silver dollars, Metynnis have been known to the aquarium trade for decades.

They have little, if any, real commercial value as wild fish and the vast majority of specimens seen for sale are bred in captivity. M. argenteus is probably the species best known to aquarists and is the archetypal silver dollar.
